Day 4 - Time to Invoke Rule 5

Ride Stats:103.9 miles, 3,136 feet of climbing, total time 8 hrs 59 mins, riding time 6 hrs 43 mins

The day began with the normal routine of breakfast and stretching before we readied the bikes in the b&b garage. Ian commented on how good his and Jeff's derrieres were feeling considering the mammoth day that they had the previous day whereupon Julie demonstrated her motivational abilities with the retort "but you haven't sat on the bike yet". As if we needed reminding, thank you Jules!

The journey out of Shrewsbury was very smooth considering it was rush hour when we came across a portent that told us our minds and the blog has become a bit too fixated with one problem.
MORRIS LUBRICANTS!

We resolved there and then to invoke Rule 5 of "The Keepers of the Cog". Fellow cyclists may well be familiar with this rule but for those of you who aren't here is the link

The ride from Shrewsbury to Warrington was probably the best stretch we've experienced so far, flat and with a helping wind. In fact for those of you who were following us on Glympse you may have thought we were being towed by a milk float, as we were averaging 20 to 25 mph.

Unfortunately when we hit Warrington the ride became quite frustrating and slow as we were constantly having to stop at traffic lights.  This basically continued all the way through to Preston. We have to say that this was not very enjoyable.
However things were soon to brighten up when we met the support crew airing the daily wash at a garden centre just south of Lancaster and then shortly afterwards we were met just outside Lancaster by Vince's mum and dad, Sandy and Tony.  They had driven all the way up from Hayling Island just to see us which was really special - it was an emotional moment.

Tonight in Lancaster we are staying at a house of one of Ian's friends, Nick and his wife Gill, from his keep fit club.  They have been so generous: putting us all up for the night, doing the washing and feeding us masses of pasta - exactly what we needed.  Sandy and Tony were also invited to join us and we have had a great night.  All of this they did as their contribution to our cause so sincere thanks guys from all of us.
Some more of Ian's friends from the keep fit club were there to welcome us and listen to to tales from the ride so it really did feel like home from home.

Robin tells us that tomorrow will be very windy from the South west (good) but likely to be quite rainy later on. Robin's forecasts are proving to be so accurate (unlike the BBC) that we are considering setting our watches by it!

  3. Two weeks ago we were putting the T.V.on first thing in the morning to watch the Olympics. Now we are up early to put Glympse on, and it's just as exciting as we watch that little arrow going along. Can't believe how far and fast you guys go in a day. Keep "rockin' up those hills in Scotland. Cherry & Geoff xx
